**Artist Biography:Marwen Wafi**
I am a self-taught fine art photographer based in Tunisia. In my practice, I reject traditional documentary conventions in favor of absolute aesthetic freedom. Focusing on the unstyled momentum of Mediterranean coastal life, I create moody, minimalist compositions shaped by silhouette and abstraction. I rely on Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) not merely as a technique, but as an act of visual rebellion, dragging the shutter to deliberately dissolve the physical human form into kinetic velocity. Recognized with two winning entries in the Experimental Lab category at the Huawei XMAGE Awards 2025, my cinematic studies of motion and light invite viewers to confront the profound beauty of the everyday.
**Project: The Impressionist Coast**
"The Impressionist Coast" is a six-image conceptual project that reinterprets the energetic rhythm of a coastal summer evening in Bizerte, Tunisia through a distinctly painterly visual language. While the literal subject is a local beach tennis match at sunset, the project rejects traditional documentary realism. Instead, it transforms fleeting athletic gestures, shimmering reflections, and tidal movement into impressionistic studies of liquid texture, motion, and atmospheric warmth.
The narrative of creation for this project required intense physical endurance and environmental immersion. Executed entirely on a Huawei P30 Pro across two dedicated sessions from August to September 2025, capturing this series demanded kneeling directly in the active tidal wash for over thirty minutes at a time. By anchoring the mobile lens just millimeters above the wet sand, I shot hundreds of frames in rapid succession to isolate the exact micro-seconds where the water’s ripples reshaped the human figures most poetically. The hardware choice was deliberate; the slim profile of the mobile device allowed for an extreme low-angle perspective that larger camera systems could not achieve without breaking the water's surface tension.
In post-production, the project relies on one primary conceptual manipulation: a complete 180-degree vertical inversion of the frame. To maintain a strict end-to-end mobile workflow, this structural flip, alongside the warm atmospheric color grading that unifies the sequence, was executed entirely within Adobe Lightroom mobile. This deliberate act transforms the heavily textured shoreline into a luminous, dream-like sky, allowing the reflected world to read less as documentation and more as a painterly construction. Yet, despite this visual transformation, the work remains anchored to reality. Recognizable human elements, such as a poised stance, a waiting partner, or the reaching swing of a racquet, act as subtle narrative anchors within the fluid abstraction. In selected frames, the figures are pushed further into shimmering distortion, where movement and reflection merge so completely that the physical body begins to dissolve into color, texture, and light. This fragmentation is intentional. As the physical intensity of the game increases, the surface of the water becomes more agitated, turning the scene into a living impressionist canvas. Ultimately, the project prioritizes tactile atmosphere and emotional resonance over literal realism, revealing the coast not as a fixed place, but as a shifting field of sensation, vitality, and light.
